Sharon’s Appeal for
Noah’s Arc

"Three Rainbows"

"
Oh dear, that woman she's at it again!", I can almost hear you cry,  And I could nearly forgive you too, but then I've no option but to try.
You see I'm that mad dog loving woman, behind the Sharon's Appeals
Who can't look stray dogs in the eye and not offer them a few meals!

Would I just be dreaming, if I thought that a sad rescue tale or two
Could convince everyone to help me, bring the truth back home to you?
So I've searched for some stories, not hard cos they happen every day
Rescued sick, injured & treated, loved & helped happily on their way.

Heidi had all but given up, was found painfully thin and so weak
Carried to safety in loving arms, her future looked very bleak
She was having trouble standing, and had buckshot along her spine
But when the vet examined her, thought best to heal & give her time.

Then along came the shuffling Paloma, she held her back leg aloft
A gentler nature you couldn't find, her heart & eyes so very soft
An age spent walking on a broken leg, in pain and badly bent
X-rays revealed a way to break it and reset it how it was meant.

The third tale is of a loving mother, likely run over or hit by a car
Musa had damage to her leg too, and really couldn't walk that far
She continued to feed her babies, gave them everything she could
One by one they were rescued, they'll live a King's life as they should.

So Noah's ARC they need our help, this small excerpt from just one week
To carry on their special work, hence that's why your support I seek
A dream is a wish our hearts can make, my heart makes a wish of you
That you'll help me fund more rainbows, where rescue dreams come true!

I will be fundraising to raise the money for their medication & treatment - in addition to helping other sick & injured dogs coming into the care of Noah’s Arc. Everything raised will once again be match-funded by Morgan Stanley International Foundation up to a maximum of £2,000 - so there is the potential to raise a total of £4,000 by this appeal.

I will also be coming out to Spain in October for a holiday and will be doing a street collection and further fund raising in the local area. I would very much appreciate your support and hope to see you then.

These dogs need our help and together we really can make their dreams come true!

Thank you. Sharon   "Always for the Animals"

FROM MARIA DAINES

The second newsletter in a week! I know, it's like buses, you wait for hours and then 2 come along at once:

I'm just sharing the fab news that the auction of our CD's for rescue dogs raised an amazing £155!! Thank you to everyone who participated and shared the link, the finale on Ebay was very exciting with two bidders battling it out in true warrior style! So here we go again, a 2nd auction has started for the same set of CD's which can be signed on request.

Here is the link - http://tinyurl.com/2629mok

And while writing I'd like to tell you about the new video from DDAWatch currently climbing the youtube charts and making an impact in the campaign against Breed Specific Legislation. As you know, dogs that 'resemble' a pit bull 'type' are often seized and destroyed under the rules of the Dangerous Dogs Act, regardless of the fact that they have never acted dangerously. The Dangerous Dogs Act will have its 20 year anniversary in the UK in 2011. It is a law that does not prevent dog attacks, yet it claims the lives of countless innocent family pets and costs millions to enforce, paid for by the taxpayer! We hope to bring this issue to the attention of the public by sharing the video with as many people as possible and already there are over 3000 views in less than 48 hours. If you would like to help, please view and send the link below to your friends and relatives.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFUe2caxPmo

More news! We now have a CD singles download page and in the coming weeks many songs that are not on album collections will be available to buy separately. So far 'Will You Be There?' and 'God Bless Jack' are released and proceeds from 'God Bless Jack' will be donated to Whitehall Dog Rescue in Wakefield, where Jack was found.

 http://www.cdbaby.com/Artist/MariaDaines1

If you're not familiar with Jack's story you can read the case on the link below, but be warned it is very distressing and we hope Jack's legacy will be that funds will be raised so that other dogs are saved in his memory.

Thanks to everyone who does whatever they can to make a difference and wishing you all a happy November.

 Bye for now. Best wishes

Greyhound Deaths
Spark Campaign

22.08.10

The Swindon Advertiser has published an excellent article highlighting the recent death toll of greyhounds forced to perform on Swindon dog track.

In July alone four greyhounds were destroyed after sustaining injuries deemed uneconomical to treat and on August 1st, Swindon dog track took its 5th victim in just under four weeks.

Rackethall Kenny, Swift Abel, Day Two, Wots Er Name and her sister Brizzle Bling – both only two years old - all lost their lives in the name of entertainment and to further bulge the wallets of the bookmakers.

In Memory of Clash Nitro & Rent A Flyer

   12.07.10

Today marks the fourth anniversary of the slaughter of Clash Nitro and Rent A Flyer who were caught on camera being led to their deaths by David Smith at Seaham in County Durham.

Yesterday, supporters from Greytexploitations laid flowers and held a minutes silence at the entrance of the smallholding where the Sunday Times estimated 10,000 greyhounds had been buried over a 15 year period.

Mr Smith respectfully acknowledged their wishes and further expressed how deeply sorry he was for the distress he had caused as a result of his actions. Details of Mr Smith’s remorseful account surrounding the exposure will be published at a more appropriate time.

Today - let us not forget Clash Nitro and Rent A Flyer and the thousands of greyhounds who’s unnatural deaths go unrecorded every year –  simply to supply betting ‘units’ for the gambling industry.

Please light a candle, take time to reflect and hold these innocent and trusting souls in your thoughts…….

Letter of frustration from a Murcia Animal Rescue Centre

A dog with a rope around its neck wandered into offices in Cartagena, right next to Catad.
A man working there decides to take it home with him to Camposol - despite the fact that his family have tried to adopt other dogs before and had to return to the Charity from whence they came because his own dogs will not accept other dogs.
So what does he do??????

Daily he pesters all the local charities for help DESPITE the fact that the dog was found in Cartagena and he KNEW it would not be accepted by his dogs. All local charities have said they cannot cope with a dog out of area - or are full up at present.

The law in Spain regarding found animals is "finders keepers". In other words if you find the dog you have to make arrangements for it welfare. He continues to refuse to take it to CATAD and insists local charities should be responsible.

Where does this man keep his brain?????????

FROM MARIA DAINES;

Dear all,
A quick note to say hi and hope you are all enjoying summer! Here in the UK we're in the middle of the first dry, sunny couple of weeks that we've had for a long time so we're not complaining but heck it is hot!

Some news to share with you, we are releasing a new CD this month, a collection of songs for bull breed dogs that as you probably know, really have a bad deal not only in the UK but all over the world. These generally lovely dogs are discriminated against because of a bad law called Breed Specific Legislation, it means any dog that even looks remotely like a banned breed can be confiscated, locked away and even destroyed. So, we have an answer to that! Yes a new CD entitled 'Not Guilty!'.
You can read about it on these two links, the full press release is in the news section -

http://www.maria-daines.com/news.html    And the purchase info is on this link -

http://www.maria-daines.com/products.html      We hope the Not Guilty! CD makes an impact in helping to raise awareness of the issues affecting these dogs and all funds raised from sales will go to bull breed rescue.
Our friend Bill created the art work and he's making the CD's for us to keep costs to a minimum so I'll be shipping mid July to give the poor man time to make enough copies, and time to breathe if there's a sales rush!

Thanks for any support you can give us in sharing the news. We're also working on a new song for a dog named Lennox and Lennox is a prime example of why BSL must end, you can read his story here -http://www.savelennox.co.uk/

And if you have time please support Lennox's family in any way you can, they are desperately trying to save Lennox's life and received some good press in the Belfast Telegraph this week, you can read the story on this link - http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/local-national/family-fight-to-save-their-pet-seized-by-wardens-14855253.html

Many thanks and keep on rockin!!   Best wishes  Maria & Paul xx  http://www.maria-daines.com

  ~ Death and Dissection ~

12.05.10

The Manchester Evening News has published an excellent article exposing – yet again - the continued destruction of greyhounds sustaining injuries ‘uneconomical to treat’ and greyhounds ‘uneconomical to re-home’ at Belle Vue dog track.

Officials told M.E.N. journalist - Yakub Qureshi - that in the last 12 months, Liverpool University scientists had received 33 dogs from the stadium – 31 of these were put to sleep because of injury and the two others put down because of aggressive behaviour.

"CLOSE TRACK" CALL AFTER ANOTHER GREYHOUND DIES
Long list of Belle Vue fatalities continues

An international greyhound protection group has renewed its calls for the closure of the dog track at Manchester's Belle Vue Stadium, after learning of the death yet another greyhound there.

Greylag Sophie, who was less than two years old, collapsed and died suddenly at the end of a race last Wednesday afternoon, following a collision with another dog on the first bend.
The greyhound's death has led to increased support for Greyhound Action's call for an end to dog racing at the stadium, where the group's local supporters already hold regular demonstrations.

Tony Peters, Greyhound Action's UK Co-ordinator, said: "Greylag Sophie's tragic death is just one of a long list of greyhound fatalities at Belle Vue Stadium. "We were informed of the incident by an official at the track, who has become increasingly concerned about the suffering and slaughter of dogs caused by the greyhound racing industry."

Just a few weeks ago, another young dog, called Afflecks Palace, was 'put down' by the track vet, after being seriously injured when he was knocked over by another dog during a race.
Details obtained by greyhound protection campaigners under the Freedom of Information Act indicate that over 40 dogs are being 'put down' annually at the stadium after suffering injuries there.

Thousands of injuries to greyhounds, many of them serious, occur every year in Britain. The main reason for this is that the shape of the tracks, with fast straights leading into tight bends, creates a very dangerous environment for dogs to run in.

In addition, hundreds of other greyhounds, bred because of the demand created by Belle Vue, are put to death as puppies or young dogs, before they even make it to the track, after being judged unsuitable for racing.

According to recent research, more than 12,000 greyhounds, bred for the British racing industry, are 'put down' every year, after failing to make the grade as racers or when their 'careers' on the tracks come to an end.

An RSPCA report on greyhound racing has stated that 'at least 20 greyhounds a day - either puppies which do not make the track, or retired dogs aged three or four - simply disappear, presumed killed'.

"Members of the public can help put an end to this horrific situation by not attending dog tracks or betting on greyhound racing, so this appalling industry fades away through lack of financial support."

A photo taken at one of their demos outside Belle Vue can be viewed and downloaded (right click on picture) at http://tinyurl.com/Demo-at-Belle-Vue for use, free of charge.

It’s Official ~ Portsmouth Dog Track is now Closed!

30.03.10

After weeks of speculation, the Racing Post has confirmed Portsmouth dog track will close with immediate effect.

Eric Graham – Portsmouth General Manager – had refused to speak to the media in recent weeks but was forced to break his silence stating “I am bitterly disappointed that we will not be able to continue with greyhound racing at the stadium. It is particularly galling given that I have struggled on through a loss-making period with the thought that we would look forward to a new lease and the summer period which would have helped mitigate the loss”

The GBGB have announced funding will be made available for the re-homing of dogs retiring from Portsmouth, although many of the 200 dogs will go on to race on other tracks - thereby displacing and forcing slower dogs racing on those tracks onto the scrapheap.

Whilst it is the absolute responsibility of the trainers/owners and the  gambling industry to ensure the welfare of all their greyhounds - commercial greyhound racing demands they force that responsibility onto the public, once their dogs are no longer of any commercial use as gambling units.

The closure of Portsmouth is not simply a local issue – the effects will be felt nationally and will place further strain on the continually over stretched independent greyhound rescues nationwide, who receive no funding from the industry and depend solely on the generosity of public donations.

Please forward the YouTube link below and ask friends and colleagues to help support a greyhound rescue group or to consider fostering or adopting a loyal and loving greyhound ~ thank you

~ Snip Nua Update ~

26.03.10

Thank you to the hundreds of supporters who emailed the BBC and voiced their concerns over the broadcasting of Three Men Go to Ireland/Three Men in a Boat.

A programme which inspired Philip Peake – Mullingar dog track’s General Manager – to proclaim ‘the visit of one of the BBC's top rating programme's is not only great publicity for greyhound racing and the Stadium but also with other activities planned around the locality it's a fantastic opportunity to showcase the region to an international audience’

The BBC have now admitted to Greytexploitations, they were aware of Snip Nua’s destruction before the programme was broadcast but have failed to provide us with a reason why they chose not to acknowledge her death, by way of an announcement prior to or at the end of the programme and - at the very least - inform complainants the BBC were aware of Snip’s destruction prior to the programme being aired.

In the absence of any public statement from either Dara O’Briain or the BBC, and in light of the BBC’s failure to answer even the simplest of questions regarding the untimely death of Snip Nua, a series of peaceful demonstrations are now being organised. Please link to the full update for details of how you can help.

Shortly after our last update the Irish Mail on Sunday published an article headlined ‘Dara’s dog starred in Three Men after she was put down’. An article which the newspaper claims ‘raises questions over the treatment of animals in the world of greyhound racing’

Snip Nua ~ Rest In Peace (see article below)

Many of you will already be aware, confirmation has officially been received of Snip Nua’s destruction at Harolds Cross dog track on December 14th, after sustaining a broken hock, in what we now know to have been her last and fatal race.

Snip Nua, at the tender age of 19 months, competed in just 7 races before she was deemed a financial liability by her 16 affluent syndicate members, to include the Business Editor of the Irish Times – Frank McNally and of course, the ‘joker’ in the pack, Dara O’Briain.

Did the BBC Callously Dismiss the Deaths of Two Greyhounds?

~ Please Take Action ~ e-mail your disgust that wealthy
people can do such a thing.

 20.01.10

On New Years day the BBC aired another shameful piece of pro racing propaganda – Three Men in a Boat - and on a day when last year’s Christmas Special achieved the BBC’s highest rating over the festive period, with 5 million viewers.

The Three Men in a Boat – Rory McGrath, Griff Rhys-Jones and Dara O’Brian – as part of their travels across Ireland visit Mullingar dog track on October 10th, to gamble on O’Brian’s jointly owned greyhound, Snip Nua.

It has been alleged Snip Nua has since been destroyed due to sustaining a horrific injury prior to the BBC airing the programme. The fate of Redwood Rio – who was badly injured during the BBC sponsored race at Mullingar – remains unknown.

ACUDAME INFORMA

Problems with state dog pounds?

Spain Animal Hub is yet again trying to get a solution with a state dog pound.

In truth, we are far from satisfied with the answers we are getting so far, nevertheless, there are people, because of their love for animals, don't see things as they are, things we all want to change but a warlike & aggressive attitude don't help, in fact, they hinder.
There are a few things we would like to point out that may help those who try to deal with State dog pounds.
Clearly, nobody can accept the conditions and treatment of the animals in the biggest number of these pounds, but there are things to take into account to avoid agravating the problems.

The employees do their work under a contract and following orders and are not always the guilty ones. If you attack or insult them, you will get nowhere.

If you send out e-mails about animals for rescue from the pounds and make bad comments or insults they will end up excluding you from entry or taking photos etc. and you will certainly not get any other favours.

Until we are able to change things, we have to work with them under their rules but bit by bit, they can be educated rather than giving them problems.

The HUB knows that this is not easy to swallow but it is the only way at the end of the day to win the battle. The dog pounds are not the guilty ones, it is the government, the councils and the police who all share the blame. We repeat, the employees work under contract and orders.

Please take this into account if you want to achieve co-operation.

This article is from the Leader

A judge in Granada yesterday took custody of a dog away from its owner for systematically mistreating it. In a landmark case for Spain. The man was first charged in 2007 when two neighbours reported him for hitting the dog, a black-and-white bitch called “Chica.”

“We saw him hit and kick the dog and then grab it by the throat as if he was going to strangle it,” one of the witnesses told local press.

The man is also alleged to have left the dog for days in a space five centimetres wide between a closed window and a grille and the unrepentant owner told the court: “The dog isn’t bothered if I hit it. It’s just an animal.”

The cruel offender, identified only as P. A. G., had been fined 720 Euros two years ago by the same judge and after a series of repeat offenses, the animal’s custody was granted to a shelter.

Actualizado miércoles 16/12/2009 06:07 horas     JUDGE FINDS A CASE AGAINST A DOG POUND

TRIUMPH???
A court in Spain gave a man  an 18 month prison sentence for kicking a dog to death.
The penalty clearly was not sufficient but at least the incident didn't get ignored

¿TRIUMFO?

It is incredible that the so called 'animal loving British' don't treat Greyhounds much better than they do in Spain.

tu mama Pilar

The Spirit Of A Greyhound

I was standing on a hillside in a field of blowing wheat,
And the spirit of a Greyhound was lying at my feet.

He looked at me with kind dark eyes, ancient wisdom shining through.
In the essence of his being, I saw such love there too.

His mind locked upon my heart, as I stood there on that day,
And he told me of this story about a place so far away.

As I stood upon that hillside, in a field of blowing wheat,
In a twinkling of a second, his spirit left my feet.

His tale put my heart at ease; all my fears did fade away
About what lay ahead of me, on another distant day

"I live among God's creatures now, in the heavens of your mind
So do not grieve for me my friend, as I am with my kind

My collar is a rainbow's hue; my leash is a shooting star

My boundaries are the Milky Way, where I sparkle from afar

There are no pens or kennels here, for I am not confined
But I'm free to roam God's heavens, among the Greyhound kind

I nap the day on a snowy cloud, gentle breezes rocking me
And dream the dreams of earthlings and how it used to be

The trees are full of liver treats and tennis balls abound
And milk bones line the walkways, just waiting to be found

There is even a ring set up, the grass all lush and green
And everyone who gaits around becomes the Best of Breed

For we're all winners in this place; we have no faults, you see
And God passes out those ribbons, to each one, even me

I drink from waters laced with gold, my world a beauty to behold
And wise old dogs form my pride, to amble at my very side

At night I sleep in an angel's arms, her wings protecting me
And moonbeams dance about us, just as stardust falls on thee

So when your life on earth is spent and you stand at Heaven's gate
Have no fear of loneliness - for here, you know, I wait”
